Home Freezer Maintenance for Energy Efficiency
While we’re on the topic of home maintenance, take a look at your freezer.
My upright freezer is ancient according to energy efficiency years. Purchased back in the energy efficiency dark ages, this freezer would not pass EnergyStar requirements by any stretch of my imagination. It isn’t even frost-free as you can see by the picture below.
Springtime usually finds my freezer empty of most edible foods which I had put away for the winter.
However, as you can see, by spring it is full of ice (not the kind you put in your tea) and needs a defrost job.
Freezers in this condition require much more energy to work, increasing energy costs.
Now if you are fortunate enough to have a frost-free freezer, you have no worries about the defrosting issues I face. Good for you!
But here’s a tip to remember: An empty freezer uses more energy than a full freezer.
So if your food supply is running low in the freezer department, fill some plastic jugs with water and keep them stored in the empty freezer space. Take them out when you need the space for frozen food items. This will keep your freezer going at minimum expense to your energy budget.
Thank Goodness energy efficient frost-free freezers are on the market. You may be sure that a new EnergyStar rated upright freezer is on my list of home energy improvements.
