Prepare for Home Solar Energy During the Credit Crisis

Recent news of the extended federal energy tax credits for renewable energy energized the solar industry. Everything was coming up sunshine! On 140 acres of unused land on Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., 70,000 solar panels are part of a solar photovoltaic array that will generate 15 megawatts of solar power for the base.

With the more recent events in financial news, some think the sun is setting on solar. The credit crunch makes people think twice before doling out dollars for a solar home energy system.

While the current credit crisis can dim our solar prospects, seen in a dif

ferent light, the credit crisis can serve us well in preparing us for our solar energy future

.

Now is the time to practice energy conservation and implement efficiency measures. Reduce your home energy use to the basic minimums. Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs. Set your thermostat to 80 degrees in summer and 69 degrees in winter. Put a timer on your hot water heater. Wash your clothes in cold water as much as possible. Add weather stripping to your windows and doors.

When the current credit crisis passes, you’ll know how much energy your home uses; therefore better able to determine how much solar modules you require.
