Renewable Energy Politics

Those of us interested in home solar energy, or any renewable energy for that matter, keep an eye turned toward Washington. What happens over there impacts those of us who live here in the real world.

Ben McMakin recently wrote and article entitled Five Cleantech Senate Candidates to Watch . He highlights five Senate candidates up for election this November.

“But if elected, these five candidates will no doubt change, shape and lead the debate in Washington and be strong voices on behalf of the cleantech industry for years to come.”

But what captured my attention was Mr. McMakin’s suggestion that American is divided into two camps. One is the “Drill Now” group; the other is the “alternative and renewable energy” group. Come election time we must choose between “drill now” and “renewable energy.”

I am tired of the “us versus them” attitude. We all live on this planet together.

I suggest there is a third way.

The third way is “drill here” while we get the “renewable energy” market up on its feet.

Thoughtful people understand we cannot rely on fossil fuel forever. And they also know a shift to renewable energy cannot happen by flipping a switch.

Anybody else have a different idea? Please leave a comment.
