Politics and Home Solar Energy

By Solar energy | August 30, 2008

If you care about affordable home solar energy you need to pay attention to current politics. The president we elect and the congressional leaders we send to Washington will have to make real choices concerning our national energy supply.

John McCain, the Republican Party candidate for president, favors a market-based cap and trade system which would reward energy companies for efficient and effective greenhouse gas emissions. Somehow, this is supposed to “diversify our energy mix.” Does that mix mean solar? Read McCain’s remarks about his plan here. Read the plan itself, the Lexington Plan, here.

Barak Obama, the Democratic Party candidate says he will dramatically increase investment in clean energy technologies and energy efficiency. He proposes increasing fuel efficiency standards, biofuels, electricity from renewable sources, and a low carbon fuel standard. You can listen to Obama’s New Energy for America speech here.

Many arguments sound as if we must choose between fossil fuel and renewable resources. As this article points out, we will have to transition away from fossil fuel while at the same time stepping up our ability to us renewable energy sources. Getting off our oil-dependence will not happen overnight. We cannot flip a switch and in one simple motion “go solar.” But we can certainly move in that direction!

Chris Stimpson at Solar-nation.org keeps an eye on Washington, and helps keep us current on what congress and political candidates are promising about alternative energy solutions.
