Home Energy Audit Results Moving us Toward Solar Home Energy

Applying a solar energy solution to our home requires step-by-step decision. Sometimes it feels like hiking through uncharted terrain. There’s a decision to make at every turn. Our recent energy audit left us with a backpack full of decisions!

Here’s more information from our recent professional home energy audit. I’ve noted in these pages our auditor’s findings about our hot water heater and our heating/cooling system. Today’s post is about our windows.

We currently have glass and aluminum storm windows. They look helpful, but actual insulating performance is minimal according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Our auditor suggested we replace our windows with double-paned low-e windows. If we wait on replacement we definitely need to caulk around the outside of all our windows. The windows were caulked well on installation, but caulking doesn’t last forever. It’s time to caulk again.

Replacing our regular window screens with solar screens was another recommendation. Solar window screens block the solar heat, greatly reducing summer time energy bills.

If you want to go solar or just reduce your home energy consumption, windows matter. Searching window choices on the internet is a maze all its own. No “one-size-fits-all” section here. One must consider quality of materials, quality or construction, energy efficiency, styles, to name a few.

So do a little window research and consult with a professional energy auditor for the best window choice for your home.
